Grinding is one of the more important processes in coffee making. Ground coffee starts to lose it flavors and aromatics immediately after it is ground, so most coffee lovers opt to grind their roasted beans themselves. A manual coffee grinder has the advantage of adding very little heat to the beans while grinding which means that more of the aromatics stay trapped in the grounds and in your finished cup.

These classic contraptions, also known as box grinders, can grind a pot’s worth of coffee beans at a time although not without a little effort. They come in two kinds, the traditional hand grinders with propeller blades, and the burr grinders, which are popular in electric grinders but no longer common in manual grinders. They are also relatively easy to use; however, grinding time depends largely on how fine you need the coffee beans to be.

In addition to providing you with nice, fresh coffee grounds, a manual coffee grinder is also a decorative, conversation piece for your kitchen. It adds a vintage look and may be enough of a curiosity that you could convince your guests to try it our on the next fresh pot.

The downside is that you have to work to grind a pot’s worth of beans or more than a couple espresso shots. Inexpensive manual coffee grinders are lightweight too so you have to hold down the grinder with one hand while turning the handle. The payoff is that everybody drinking the coffee will guarantee it tastes better as a result of your effort.

Another charm of these old school coffee grinders that some user reviews have pointed out is that they can be a way to prevent you from downing cup after cup of coffee. With the work that is required from you to produce a couple of shots, surely, you won’t be taking too much caffeine with these babies.

Just remember, though, that unless you’re using it as a workout machine to buff your arms, a manual coffee grinder is not really intended for producing large amounts of ground coffee. If you need more than a couple cups worth of grounds, an electric grinder is a better choice.

Although the Gaggia Carezza and Evolution share the same innards, the Evolution boasts several improvements in design. With its 17.5 bar pump and high wattage, dual element boiler, the Gaggia Evolution is ready to brew in around 5-10 minutes (I always prime the boiler first).

This machine is nothing short of a steal for someone on a budget interested in a true espresso machine. The innards of this Gaggia are identical to every one of their models from this one up until the Gaggia Baby (which adds a solenoid pressure relief valve) which retails for around $450. The portafilter is the same commercial grade 58mm hunk of brass, the aluminum boiler is the same as the Gaggia boiler found in their far more expensive machines. There is simply no comparison between this model and any non-Italian made competitor, such as Krups.

That said, one ought to realize that they cannot produce true crema-laden espresso without a grinder capable of producing an even, fine espresso grind, coupled with freshly roasted beans. This machine ought to be paired with the Gaggia MDF grinder, a Rancilio Rocky, or a Mazzer Mini. For those on a budget, you might be able to get away with a Solis Maestro Plus or Capresso Infinity or Vaneli’s Maximo, but even these are barely up to the challenge. The Maestro and Infinity will be like driving a car in first gear: you’ll get espresso, but not much flexibility in improving your shots. The Maximo is better. Avoid other budget grinders (anything lower than a Gaggia MDF). Gagggia’s budget burr grinder (not the MDF), for example, is not up to the task.

Be aware that the price seems to fluctuate on Amazon, but it can typically be bought for just under $200 at the more famous espresso on-line places, and sometimes here at Amazon.

We had to replace our Saeco Super Automatic after 4.5 years of constant use. It finally wore out. We were happy with it, but wanted our next machine to have additional features.

The Gaggia 9004 Syncrony Compact attracted us because it has a smaller footprint and has a single shot doser to allow us to brew other coffees (pre-ground) in the machine in addition to the beans in the hopper/grinder. My wife likes decaf and I like a jolt in the morning. We also liked the fact that this model has a dual boiler instead of a single boiler (one for coffee, one for steam) to make steaming your lattes faster and easier. The digital controls give you extensive control over how your coffee is brewed. You can control temperature, quantity of beans, quantity of coffee dispensed and adjust for water hardness. You can dispense three types of coffee, espresso, normal coffee, & Café Lungo (espresso with extra water added, similar to Café Americano) with a single button press. Press the button twice, and you get a double shot.

What has surprised me about the machine is the grinding process is MUCH quieter than our previous Super Automatic. The tamping process produces the same rather loud “clacks” as other super automatics, but the grinder is much quieter and smoother sounding. What are the downsides to this machine? The smaller footprint means a smaller bean hopper and a smaller water reservoir. Not a big deal for us. I wish there had been a better design for the hopper that holds the used coffee grounds after brewing. You have to remove the drip tray to remove the hopper. Seems like an unnecessary extra step. I’ll update my review later with comments about durability, since we haven’t had it long enough to comment. However, other reviewers give it good marks on other sites fgive it consistently, so I am optimistic.

I highly recommend that you do not use oily coffee beans as they will hinder the performance of the machine. Suggest Lavazza Italian “Super Crema” Espresso Whole Beans (2.2 lb bag): FREE SHIPPING as a good starter coffee for this machine.

100% (super) automatic at the best price, in a form factor that would fit on my counter, were my requirements. The Gaggia Syncrony Compact Digital was the clear winner. Biggest complaints: Vendor intentionally removes a non-essential item from the package before shipping but does not inform customer of this action; and the Operation Manual is poorly written.
